I saw that story last week or the week before which mentioned that Target had given money to a political action committee and that political action committee gave money to some far right wing homophobe. I was incredibly deflated. I foolishly thought that Target was the good box store and that Wal-Mart was evil. There may be a small glimmer of hope. It appears that Target is going to look over their policies (whatever that means).
Maybe I should quit buying stuff altogether?

I am troubled by retailers like Target and Best Buy whose customer's are diverse but their politics are not. The collapse of McCain-Feingold (by those activists judges – oh yea – can't be an activist if you are conservative) will likely lead to more of this. That's all we need are more divisive actions.
I've been a Target shareholder for 9 years but am looking into diversture. I wrote investor relations and was told they would review their policies.
I have no issue with the CEO and others contributing to whatever they want to. I have issues with spending shareholder money on politics.
Let's remember that the court included unions with the corporations in the Citizens United case.

Joe, I don't pretend to know much about the way union's operate. Historically they were needed to protect workers from greedy capitalists but that morphed at times into criminal operations.
I'm guessing since you brought it up that they do give funds, and mostly to democrats. I'll say this about it. They can quit the unions if they don't like their contributions. I'll bet they disclose it to their members. Public corporations are spending shareholder money. So I can sell their stock and not shop them. I may do both.
Dataguy7, you've got a number of things wrong: first, in many companies regarding certain jobs in those companies, mostly in the north, your job is guaranteed to be a union job, so you can't just quit the union but keep the job. You either quit the job or stay in the union. In Right-to-Work states, like Texas, you have none of that nonsense.
Secondly, If you don't like the corporate giving policies, then don't shop at the store and don't buy their stock. They are free to do what they want as private entities. McCain-Feingold was unconstitutional and needed to be booted. And yes, you can't be an activist conservative judge if you are following the Constitution. By definition; that's not activism.
Lastly: STOP using apostrophes for plural words!!!!! “Customer's” and “union's?” Those should be “customers” and “unions!”

I am in favor of disallowing corporations and unions from making ANY political contributions to a candidate or to a political party.
The courts once compared donations to votes. I think since only individuals can vote, then only individuals should be able to donate.
Further, I think individuals should only be allowed to donate to those for whom they are legally qualified to vote, i.e. you should not be able to donate to a Congressman in a district where you do not live and you are not registered to vote.
Candidates should not be able to swing elections by going out of district or out of state and soliciting funds to overwhelm the will of the people in their district.
yes Joe were going to be consistent. As you know, many unions actually vote on who they will support who they won't. Corporations never vote on this. It is just done.
I am happy for unions and corporations to stay out of politics.
So when are you going to write a post with a headline like “UAW Gives to Left Wing Politicians — This Must End” ? When are you going to talk about avoiding buying a new car until they comply?

I wonder, Good Doctor, if you have problems with the political activies of Teachers Unions and Labor Unions that have such a track record of destorying local economies? See Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, Trenton, Oakland, Newark, St Louis, Cleveland?
If this political action committee from Target is the only thing that has you flustered then perhaps you should adjust your vision prescription.
Joe I agree with you. I hadn't noodled on limiting contributions to your own districts but I think I like it. In my district Dan Quale's son is one of about 10 Republicans going for an open seat. Quale is heavily funded by buddies of Bush. I don't see why Texan's should be funding an AZ election.
I understand this works both ways but I like the idea. Never happen though.
