Early reports of typhoon Haiyan stated that there were 100 dead. I thought those reports were a waste of electrons. We know the Philippines is a poor country without an advanced system to get people out of the way of an approaching storm. (I’m not sure if any country has a good system to move large numbers of people from one area to another.) From CNN: A day after Super Typhoon Haiyan roared into the Philippines, officials predicted that the death toll could reach 1,200 — or more. “We estimate 1,000 people were killed in Tacloban and 200 in Samar province,”
