Heath Shuler will not run for re-election

Shocking announcement. U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, D-Waynesville, will not run for re-election, his office confirmed this afternoon. First elected in 2006, Shuler won handily in 2008 and 2010, but his 11th Congressional District was dramatically redrawn last year, removing the dependably Democratic heart of Asheville. Shuler’s press secretary confirmed he will not run.
