Isaac Hayes Dead at 65

Now, this is a man who overcame his challenges. He wrote most of his greatest hits without being able to read music. Isaac Hayes was a true original.

From Rolling Stone: Grammy- and Oscar-winning soul star Isaac Hayes has died after being found unconscious in his Tennessee home. Relatives reportedly found the singer next to a running treadmill, and paramedics brought him to a hospital, where he was declared dead. While the cause of death hasn’t been released at this time, a police spokesman said the family believes “a medical condition” was to blame.

Hayes, who was born in Covington, Tennessee on August 20, 1942, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 by Alicia Keys. His 1971 score for Shaft earned him an Academy Award and two Grammys, and he picked up another Grammy the following year for his 1971 double album Black Moses. (more… )

Bo Diddley

The Rolling Stone had a very nice tribute to this great Rock n’ Roll giant. I don’t think that he got the credit or the money that he deserved. The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton recognized Bo’s contribution to modern Rock n’ Roll.

Bo Diddley, one of the founding fathers of rock and roll, died today in his home in Archer, Florida, where he had lived for 20 years. The cause was heart failure, according to a spokesperson. Diddley performed live until May 2007, when he suffered a stroke; three months later, in August, he also suffered a heart attack. The spokesperson said that he was surrounded by family and friends when he died. Public and private services are scheduled for this weekend.

In the summer of 2005, Rolling Stone writer Neil Strauss caught up with Diddley for the magazine’s last major feature on him, the award-winning “Indestructible Beat of Bo Diddley.”
