Pixar’s Brave

Pixar’s Brave opens this weekend across the country. This is the first major movie from Pixar starring a heroine. Let me end the suspense. This is a great movie. It has a wonderful story and Pixar animation. Yes, the movie is thoroughly entertaining, but I was completely blown away by the animation. The detail (in one scene where our heroine was riding a horse through the woods, the horse looked so good I questioned if it was real or not) was phenomenal.

Disney, tired of getting its butt kicked, bought Pixar several years ago. The good news for Pixar fans is that it seems the quality of their movies has remained outstanding. On the other hand, I have to question Disney. What was John Carter? This is a movie where they spent millions of dollars in special effects but forgot to write a compelling script. John Carter was the first movie I’ve seen in a long time in which I though about leaving right after the opening credits.

If you like cartoons, if you like fantastic animation, if you like compelling stories, you’ll like Brave. I give it an A-. John Carter, on the other hand, gets a D+. This is generous because I didnenjoy the special effects.
