I’m deeply saddened to say that Annette Funicello has died. For those of us older than 45, we remember Annette as a Mouseketeer. She brought a lot of joy to millions.

From New York Times:

Annette Funicello, who won America’s heart as a 12-year-old in Mickey Mouse ears, captivated adolescent baby boomers in slightly spicy beach movies and later championed people with multiple sclerosis, a disease from which she suffered, died on Monday in Bakersfield, Calif. She was 70.

Her death, from complications of the disease, was announced on the Disney Web site.

As an adult Ms. Funicello described herself as “the queen of teen,” and millions around her age agreed. Young males enjoyed watching her blossom into womanhood, while females liked her because she was sweet, forthright and plain nice. Parents saw her as the perfect daughter.

Obama before Parliament (Updated with video)

In a speech to both houses of the British Parliament Wednesday, President Barack Obama declared that the trans-Atlantic alliance between America and Britain is indispensable to the goal of a more peaceful and prosperous world.

He said it will remain so even as more nations take on the responsibilities of leadership around the world.

Countries like India and Brazil actually owe their fortunes to U.S.-British leadership, Obama contended during his speech at London’s Westminster Hall on the second day of a state visit to England.

Before delving into the countries’ relationship, Obama laced the beginning of the speech with humor, saying the most recent speakers in the hall were the pope, the queen and Nelson Mandela, “which is either a very high bar or the beginning of a very funny joke.” He referred to the two countries’ early relations as “a small scrape about tea and taxes.”

New Pyramid found in Egypt

Ancient Egypt continues to fascinate me. I wish I had enough time to study this great culture.

Egyptian archaeologists have discovered a pyramid buried in the desert and thought to belong to the mother of a pharaoh who ruled more than 4,000 years ago, Egypt’s antiquities chief said on Tuesday.

The pyramid, found about two months ago in the sand south of Cairo, probably housed the remains of Queen Sesheshet, the mother of King Teti, who ruled from 2323 to 2291 B.C. and founded Egypt’s Sixth Dynasty, Zahi Hawass told reporters.

“The only queen whose pyramid is missing is Shesheshet, which is why I am sure it belonged to her,” Hawass said. “This will enrich our knowledge about the Old Kingdom.” (more… )
