Captured

Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev

I really don’t have anything to add. This 19-year-old male was captured.

From Boston.com:

Four days after two deadly explosions turned the finish line of the Boston Marathon into a scene of bloody chaos, the 19-year-old college student believed to be responsible for placing the bombs was taken into custody Friday night, bringing a sense of relief and justice to a shaken region.

Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev of Cambridge was pulled from his hiding place in a boat parked behind a house on Franklin Street shortly before 8:45 p.m. Friday in this community just outside Boston.

“We are eternally grateful for the outcome here tonight. We have a suspect in custody,” said Colonel Timothy Alben, commander of the State Police. “We’re so grateful to bring justice and closure to this case.”

“It’s a night where I think we’re all going to rest easy,” Governor Deval Patrick said at a news conference with a host of other officials in Watertown.

Here are some of the great tweets that are flying around the internets!! The best was from the Boston Police Department.

George Zimmerman charged with second degree murder

This is not a time to do the happy dance. This is the time where we need to stay focused. We need to continue to follow this case. Who cares if George Zimmerman is arrested today and released tomorrow? What we want is for the facts of this case to come out. We want justice to be done. If George Zimmerman truly acted in self-defense and the facts support that, then I’m okay with the results. If, on the other hand, the facts point to something different, then we need to head in that direction. Let justice be done.

From TPM:

A special prosecutor in Florida on Wednesday charged George Zimmerman with second-degree murder for the killing of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in a case that has stoked racial tensions and drawn calls for justice from seemingly every corner of the nation.

At a news conference in Florida, prosecutor Angela Corey said Zimmerman was in custody, though she declined to say where. She said the decisions to charge Zimmerman and which specific charge to bring were not easy.

“It is the search for justice for Trayvon that brought us here to this moment,” Corey said. “I can tell you that we did not come to this decision lightly.”

Joplin hit with huge tornado; death toll over 100 (updated)

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

This is so, so sad.

From St. Louis:

A massive tornado that tore through the southwest Missouri city of Joplin killed at least 89 people, but authorities warned that the death toll could climb Monday as search and rescuers continued their work at sunrise.

City manager Mark Rohr announced the number of known dead at a pre-dawn news conference outside the wreckage of a hospital that took a direct hit from Sunday’s storm. Rohr said the twister cut a path nearly six miles long and more than a half-mile wide through the center of town, adding that tornado sirens gave residents about a 20-minute warning before the tornado touched down on the city’s west side.

Much of the city’s south side was leveled, with churches, schools, businesses and homes reduced to ruins.

Fire chief Mitch Randles estimated that 25 percent to 30 percent of the city was damaged, and said his own home was among the buildings destroyed as the twister swept through this city of about 50,000 people some 160 miles south of Kansas City. (more…)

From KC Star:

The tornado, estimated to be an EF4 by the National Weather Service, tore a six-mile-long path from one-half to three-quarters of a mile wide through the middle of Joplin on Sunday. Much of the city’s south side was leveled, with churches, schools, businesses and homes reduced to ruins by winds estimated as high as 190 to 198 mph. Officials have estimated 2,000 buildings were damaged.

Rescuers have made three sweeps, block by block, in their search for survivors. Authorities have not released names or other details of the victims.

“There are going to be some things out there that are hard to see and hard to stomach,” Nixon said.

“We’re going to cover every foot of this town to make sure every person here, who was here, is accounted for,” Gov. Jay Nixon said. “…There are still lives out there that need to be saved.”

The death toll from Sunday’s tornado is now 116, city officials said this afternoon, with an estimated 400 injured. (more…)
