Zimmerman found NOT Guilty

I wish I could tell you that George Zimmerman was going to be going to jail for a number of years. I can’t. He has been found not guilty.

From Orlando Sentinel:

After nearly 16 hours of deliberations over two days, a six-member jury – all women, five of them white – acquitted Zimmerman, the Neighborhood Watch volunteer charged with murdering Trayvon Martin in what became one of the most racially-charged criminal cases in the country.

Jurors found that 29-year-old Zimmerman acted in self-defense when he shot Trayvon, an unarmed black 17-year-old, on Feb. 26, 2012 as the two fought on the ground near Zimmerman’s home. (more…)

Trayvon Martin – Update

What a difference a week makes. Last week, it seemed that I was the only one shouting in the wilderness about Trayvon Martin. Then some of the mainstream media began to report on this bizarre shooting. Color of Change got involved and collected signatures. Yesterday, or over the weekend, MoveOn.org also got involved.

From HuffPo:

The U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI have opened an investigation into the “facts and circumstances” surrounding the killing of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager shot and killed last month by a neighborhood watch captain in an Orlando suburb.

The department will “conduct a thorough and independent review of all evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation,” according to a statement late Monday.

The announcement comes as the drumbeat around the case continues to grow, becoming national news and shining a brighter media spotlight on the city of Sanford, where the killing occurred, and its police department, which handled the initial investigation that so far has failed to bring charges.

Lord, help me understand

Why is this young man dead?

From Miami Herald:

Trayvon Martin traveled to Sanford on a trip with his father. The teen returned to his Miami home in a body bag.

Martin, 17, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by a neighborhood crime watch captain.

The circumstances of the shooting are still unknown, but the 26-year-old man who shot Martin, George Zimmerman, gave a statement to police that he shot in self-defense.

Martin’s grieving family said the teen went out around 7:30 on that Sunday during the NBA All-Star Game halftime to get snacks from a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store. He purchased Skittles candies and an Arizona iced tea for his stepbrother.

Somehow, on the way back to the Central Florida townhouse where Martin was staying, he ran into Zimmerman, who was armed with a 9mm handgun, reports said.

Martin was shot once in the chest.

“He had a gun, and Trayvon had Skittles,” said Benjamin Crump, the family’s attorney. “We want justice.”

I really don’t understand this. A neighborhood watch guy shot this young man? What?
