News Roundup – Cuba, Katie, New Jersey Water

President Obama is in Cuba. Yep, Cuba. I think that this is a good thing. Not talking with Cuba really has done nothing to destabilize its government in over 50 years. Let’s try to bring them into the 21st century.

Kate Couric bought a $12 million condo in New York. Look, I’m happy for her, but $12 million for 4000 sq ft? Couldn’t she have spent a million dollars and gotten something really nice in Virginia? Maybe fly back and forth? I’m just askin’.

What has happened in Flint, Michigan is a tragedy. This type of travesty should never happen in the United States. Ever. It looks as if other folks have water issues, like New Jersey. 80 carcinogens were found in New Jersey’s water supply. That’s not good.

A terror suspect has been found. Salah Abdeslam was captured in Belgium. He was wanted in the Paris attacks.

Clinton folks are going to paint Trump as unfit for the presidency. I think that this strategy is too weak. Trump needs to be painted as dangerous, undisciplined and crazy.

Another violent outburst at a Trump rally.

NCAA – Sweet 16!!!

Congratulations to Jason Day for winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Days sinks a putt on the 72nd hole for the win. It was a gutsy performance.

NPR’s Kasell to retire

NPR’s Carl Kasell to retire. I’m have listened to Carl voice for over 30 years. I will miss him.

From WaPo:

We knew Carl Kasell’s last taping of “Wait Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me” was going to be a big deal, which is so not Carl. After 16 years as official judge and scorekeeper of the NPR quiz show, and 60 years in radio, he wanted his last show to be just like any other.

As if. Sprinkled throughout the hour were tributes from Stephen Colbert, Tom Hanks, Katie Couric and President Obama, which caused the 80-year-old veteran newsman and the 1,800 people packed into the Warner Theatre on Thursday to get all verklempt. (You can hear the broadcast at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday on WAMU-FM; you’ll have to take my word about the tears.)

The crowd, as they say, went wild. We are talking public radio fans, so that meant standing ovations and loud applause, not underwear tossed onstage. At the end of the taping, they politely mobbed Carl like he was Springsteen or the Pope, thrusting items both cute (a Carl plush doll) and mildly creepy (a Carl face pillow) at him for autographs. I’m pretty sure I saw a guy in the second row tattoo Carl’s name across his heart.

Beck calls out Palin

I’m sorry, but I find this funny. Glenn Beck calling out someone because they don’t have a pat answer is funny to me. I love it. Sarah Palin has a way of never really answering a question. She will throw out a talking point. It really doesn’t matter what question you ask her. She is able to fit a couple of talking points together to give you an answer.

From TPM:

During Sarah Palin’s interview with Glenn Beck today, something extraordinary happened — Beck challenged Palin on a stock, noncommittal answer to a question. Beck asked: “Who’s your favorite Founder?”

“You know, well, all of them, because they came collectively together with so much–” Palin began, in a manner much like her non-answers to Katie Couric’s questions about which newspapers she’s read (“All of them.”) and which Supreme Court decisions she’s disagreed with (which brought a similarly broad answer about how there are a lot of decisions).

“Bullcrap,” Beck interrupted. “Who’s your favorite.”

“–so much diverse and so much diversity in terms of belief, but collectively they came together — and they were led by, of course George Washington, so he’s got to rise to the top.” Palin then gave a short speech on Washington’s virtues.

Of course, Palin’s answer is superficial and wrong in many ways. George Washington wasn’t the leader of the Continental Congress.  He didn’t write the constitution. Thomas Jefferson thought that Washington betrayed the ideals of the constitution which is why Jefferson left Washington’s Cabinet. But it is Sarah Palin, this is the exact answer that she should give. It is a conservative answer which is without depth or substance. Perfect.
