People Have A Right To Define Family As They Wish

I recently flew from Houston to Chicago to visit family. Some of the family I spent time with I like. Others I could take or leave.

We should be free to define family as we wish. For example, little is more mean and intrusive than telling people who they may or may not marry. Life is short and it is rotten to deny people the relationships that they want and hope for.

Also, we may feel we have friends we value more than people who by conventional definition are seen as family. Or we may feel that a requirement for a close family relationship is that the family member in question be someone we would want as a friend.

None of this has anything do to with treating family and all people with basic civility and respect. These are universal obligations.

Values we associate with family such as love and loyalty can become selfishness when not open to others. Family should be defined as broadly as possible.

Individuals have the right to decide who they wish to include in their own idea of family.

Sharpton Romney – What's up with this?

Al Sharpton has an interesting Black figure. He has supported the Black cause and at times seems to be out to promote Al Sharpton. So, the other day, he was debating believe in God with Christopher Hitchens who does not believe in God. His new book is God is not Great: How God poisons everything.

Here’s what Sharpton said, “As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways, so don’t worry about that; that’s a temporary situation.” The Romney camp responded with the vigor that one would expect from a Republican. Sharpton tried to explain himself, “What I said was that we would defeat him, meaning as a Republican. A Mormon, by definition, believes in God. They don’t believe in God the way I do, but by definition, they believe in God.”

Is Sharpton a bad guy? Is he the same as Imus? Sharpton like Imus has a history of running his mouth. He says too much to make his point. He goes out on a limb. I don’t know. Below is the video. You decide.

The Errington Thompson Show 3/24/07

Somehow, I skipped posting my March 24th show. I’m not sure what happened. Anyway, this is a great show if I do say so myse’f. Valerie Plame testifies in front of Congress. It was great to see her. She addressed several issues that the right were still playing with. She clearly stated that she was still covert at the time of her outing. Because so many on the Right have been trying to play this card, I go thru the exact definition of covert. Bill Scher and I discuss the US Attorney scandal. We also discuss that Murray Waas article in the National Journal about Alberto Gonzales. Seems that a Justice Department probe looking into the domestic spying was pointing to Alberto himself. He may have been the reason that the Justice Department officials couldn’t get security clearance to investigate the case. These topics and more.

Remember I’m on iTunes and several other podcasting services.
