Obama continues his roll

Do you remember after the Iowa caucus? You remember feeling that Barack Obama was going to roll through New Hampshire and the rest of the election season? Well, that feeling came crashing down quite quickly. Reality, meaning the voters of New Hampshire, raised its head. I have that same feeling now. I’m waiting for reality to return. Hillary Clinton appears to be in a free fall. She lost all four contests over the weekend. There was no good way to spin that. Nothing. Her campaign manager “steps down.” I have never seen a campaign manager step down for “family reasons” but I guess that’s possible. I think that it is more likely that she was asked to go.

Today as Barack was continuing his winning streak, Hillary Clinton was campaigning in Texas, her last stand. There is something odd about a Democrat placing their hopes and dreams one of the most Republican states, the home state of George W. Bush, Texas. Where is Molly Ivins when you need her? I’m sure that she would have some thoughtful quip that would be perfect right now. While Hillary was re-inventing herself, I’m guessing that she thought her deputy campaign manager, Mike Henry, bowed out. Are these rats leaving a sinking ship or are they dead weight that you need to throw overboard in order to cut through the water faster? I don’t know the answer.

BTW, Barack did win Maryland, Virginia and DC. Not one of the contests were close. If Hillary is not in trouble, she is doing her best to make it seem that way.

Way in the back of your mind, don’t forget about John Edwards. Bill Clinton has been to John Edwards’ house over the weekend. Barack was scheduled to go on Sunday or Monday but reporters got wind of the trip and had the house staked out. These negotiations are important. Edwards had a fair number of passionate supporters that could help Barack or Hillary.

For the Republicans John McCain continues to grind Mike Huckabee into the ground. Little by little. Although some of the contests were close, McCain won Virginia, Maryland and DC.

Economy continues to head toward the toilet

Although neocons will try to tell us that the fundamentals are solid. NOT! Anytime we have huge banks investing in hundreds of thousands of questionable loans, how is that sound? Then instead of looking into the investment, other investment groups that are either too lazy or too greedy to actually study what they are getting, will buy chunks of these sub-prime mortgages. So, Merrill Lynch, Countrywide and Citigroup are just a couple of well known institutions which are now taking a bath.

Let’s look at other data. Americans aren’t saving. How can they? Nothing is built to last except Craftsmen tools. Not cars and certainly not cellphones. Median income has been stagnant under Bush therefore it is no surprise that no one has any money to save.

Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan Ben Bernanke testified on capital hill today that a stimulus package needs to be put in place pretty quickly. Wasn’t this the guy who was telling us just a couple of months ago that everything was hunky dory? I’m just askin’??

Update: I forgot to mention that the stock market tanked today.

From AP:

United for urgent action, the White House and Congress raced toward emergency steps Thursday to rescue the national economy from a possible recession, including tax rebates of $300 or more for many Americans.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke endorsed the idea of putting money into the hands of those who would spend it quickly and boost the flagging economy. (more…)

Blackwater story continues

More and more information is coming out of Baghdad and it don’t look good for Blackwater. Yes, they have been allowed to operate in the country again but it looks as though there is video. As I stated a couple of days ago, we needed video to determine what happened. Without video it is a he said, he said kind of affair. Almost everything is videotaped these days. You almost can’t go to the bathroom (or have sex with your boyfriend for that matter) without someone videotaping you.

From MSNBC.com:

Iraqi investigators have a videotape that shows Blackwater USA guards opened fire against civilians without provocation in an incident last week in which 11 people died, a senior Iraqi official said Saturday. He said the case had been referred to the Iraqi judiciary.

Iraq’s president, meanwhile, demanded that the Americans release an Iranian arrested this week on suspicion of smuggling weapons to Shiite militias. The demand adds new strains to U.S.-Iraqi relations only days before a meeting between President Bush and Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. (more…)
