News Roundup – Bob McDonnell, cold weather, California drought, Syrian peace talks

California Dought

Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife have been charged with dozens of counts of accepting gifts and loans. Of course, he says he’s innocent. In my mind, this is a big deal. Bob McDonnell was on the fast track to the White House. He was young and energetic and extremely conservative. He had the whole package. Cracks in his exterior began to surface early. He was given a wonderful platform, rebuttal to the president’s State of the Union address, in which he failed to capitalize. I don’t think that anyone thought that his performance was stellar. Anyway, one of the back stories to this whole ordeal is the fact that former Governor McDonnell was having financial troubles when he moved into the governor’s mansion.

A huge Arctic blast is hitting the Northeast. From North Carolina all the way to Connecticut we’ve seen large snowfall and Arctic temperatures. Everyone, please be careful. Please drive safely. Please be smart.

Once again, California is in the middle of an awful, desperate drought. Governor Jerry Brown has announced water restrictions. Water restrictions are a temporary solution for a long-term problem. It is like placing a Band-Aid on an ulcer which is really cancer. The Band-Aid is a temporary solution. Simply put, California needs more water. I don’t think it’s reasonable for us to transport water from other parts of the country to California. We’ve tried that and, again, it was a temporary solution. We need a more permanent solution. Since we don’t know how to control the weather, the only solution that seems reasonable is desalination, removing salt from seawater. With California’s huge agricultural industry, this is a national problem and not only a problem for California. We need to sit down with smart people and figure out the quickest and safest way to begin desalination. (more…)

Cold, Bad Weather in the Northeast

Oh, it is cold out there. Dare I said it – the weather is frightful. Here in Huntington, WV, we got one or two inches of snow but it is currently 10. Yep, 10 degrees.

The cold is incredible. As I write this, it’s 2 above in Boston, just three degrees shy of the January record for today. I don’t use the words bitter, frigid, or dangerous very much when it comes to cold, but today they are all appropriate. This kind of cold and wind will impact not only people, but pets and even some plants. This spring, I suspect some winter damage to some of our gardens to be evident. Spring is 75 days away, so I’ll think more about it later. (more…)

Valerie Plame left out in the cold by the Bush Administration

Most informed Americans understand that Valerie Plame Wilson was a CIA operative. She was outed by Robert Novak because he wasn’t too bright. Yes, the Bush administration had feed her name to him (Richard Armitage didn’t really feed him her name but that’s a very long story). He had several warnings that intelligence reporters would have known what was up. Novak didn’t.

Anyway, so Valerie’s name is released. We all know the aftermath. She and her husband are smeared by the Right Wing. She does testify before Congress and clearly states that she was covert at the time of her outing. What I didn’t know what that Al Qaeda wanted to kill her. Larry Johnson, an ex-CIA agent, posted a story last night that Al Qaeda wanted to kill Valerie.

From Larry Johnson – In 2004 the FBI received intelligence that Al Qaeda hit teams were enroute to the United States to kill Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, and Valerie Plame. The FBI informed Valerie of this threat. This was just more “good” news piled on the fact that her intelligence career was in shambles, that intelligence assets she had recruited/managed were destroyed, and that she was unable to rebut publicly false and malicious smears of her character and reputation by a bunch of partisan Republican hacks. As the mother of two pre-school children, her first thoughts were about protecting her kids. She took the threat seriously and asked for help.

When the White House learned of these threats they sprung into action. They beefed up Secret Service protection for Vice President Cheney and provided security protection to Karl Rove. But they declined to do anything for Valerie. That was a CIA problem.

Johnson went on to note that the CIA didn’t do squat. Whatever happened to we protect our own? Oh, that’s the Army. What about we will not leave anyone behind? That’s the Marines. Shouldn’t the CIA have something similar? The Brad blog has some further information here. Still, I find this whole thing amazing.
