Jobs and the Republicans

This week, if I can focus, I will spend some time talking about the economy and jobs. I would like to start with this piece from the Political Animal. From PA: It was largely overlooked during a busy media week, but House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), who’s been reluctant to talk about his party’s policy agenda in detail, was willing to outline three measures he’d pursue as Speaker to create American jobs. The list made it painfully clear — to anyone who takes substance even a little seriously — that Boehner has no idea what he’s talking about. In fact, the remarks were

Let's make a nuclear fusion reactor in the basement

Nuclear fusion is what the sun does. The son takes two hydrogen atoms and pushes them together. The resultant reaction generates a new atom called helium and gives off energy. Gravity plays a huge part in containing the energy. Scientists have talked about nuclear fusion for years. This is the definition of clean energy. Unfortunately, the question that has haunted scientists has been how to contain the reaction. As far as I know, we cannot generate the kind of gravitational forces necessary to contain a fusion reaction here on earth. There have been ideas for developing some sort of electromagnetic bubble

Solar energy would help a lot

I don’t talk about alternative energy enough. I need to do a better job. I’ll start with this article about solar energy. From Common Dreams: Solar power technologies could generate 15 percent of America’s power in 10 years, but only if Washington levels the playing field on subsidies, a report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) says. That means either rolling back fossil fuel subsidies, as President Obama proposed earlier this year, or increasing subsidies for clean energy, the association says. Fossil fuels received $72 billion in total federal subsidies from 2002 to 2008, keeping prices artificially low, according to figures from the
