Snow White and the Huntsman – close, but no cigar

Snow White and the Huntsman is really close to being a good movie, but no cigar. Let me start by saying I like the concept of updating Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  Charlize Theron was brilliant as the evil queen/stepmother. Chris Hemsworth (Thor) was exactly what you would expect. He was great eye candy for the ladies. He wields a great axe (not that axe, this is a PG movie). Here’s the problem as I see it. The evil queen has all of these powers. She can heal wounds. She can turn into a bunch of ravens and fly away. She can suck the beauty out of young women. What does Snow White have to combat these powers? Her beauty and virtue. Really? That’s what we are going with. Yep. That’s it and that’s where the movie seems to fall flat. How does a beautiful princess become a sword-wielding warrior? Well, that transformation is not really well explained and it is probably the least believable.

If you are looking for the seven dwarfs, they really aren’t in the movie. Their roles are minor.

Finally,  Kristen Stewart is a beautiful woman. This role really doesn’t give her an opportunity to act. She smiles and cries and that’s about it.

Snow White and the Huntsman is not bad if you are flipping channels and catch it on HBO or Showtime.

Backlash over Mixed Race Spiderman is Misinterpreted

Some people refuse to understand the facts that are right in front of them. Marvel Comics seems to be getting some backlash over their “new Spiderman.” The new Spiderman is a young man who is of Black-Latino descent. Some have decided that this backlash is because we still have a racial problem here in the United States. If you remember some of those multiple-choice college questions, the answer to this question is true, true and unrelated. It is true that there is a backlash against the new Spiderman and it is true that we still have a racial problem in the United States but these two things are not related. Spiderman is an American icon. It is hard to drastically alter an American icon without getting significant backlash. If Marvel comics wants to reach out to the Black community or the Latino community then they need to create a different character who is likable like Spiderman.

Hancock was a great character. But he was designed to be imperfect. He was designed to be an antihero. The American people embraced Hancock, the movie, brilliantly played by Will Smith. The film grossed over $150 million in the United States. It grossed over $650 million worldwide, including cable and DVD sales. America does have a racial problem, but we’re getting better. 30 years ago, a Black man playing a dysfunctional superhero would’ve been laughed out of the studio. Oh, and remember, in Hancock, Will Smith’s love interest was Charlize Theron, one of the most stunning white women on the planet. Come on! Just think if Sidney Poitier or Bill Cosby played in any movie in the 1960s or 1970s where they had a love interest of the caliber of Charlize Theron. As a society, we have changed. We are not the same as we were 20 or 30 or 40 years ago. Yet we still have racial problems in the United States. Anyway, my two cents.

Begich up by 814

Mark BegichThis election season has been the best of my adult life. Only a few things could make this season any better. There is Charlize Theron or Holly Berry inviting me for a weekend on the French Riviera, and there is Al Franken winning his race against Republican Norm Coleman. There is supermodel Stacey Williams inviting me to spend the weekend with her in Maui…and there is Anchorage, Alaska Mayor Mark Begich beating convicted felon Ted Stevens in the senatorial race.

With 95,000 votes to count, Ted Stevens was ahead by over 3000 votes. I was unable to find any information on where the 95,000 remaining votes were coming from. If most of them were from Anchorage, Mark Begich would clearly be the winner. But we didn’t know. Earlier this evening, it was reported that approximately half of the votes had yet to be counted and Mark Begich was ahead by three votes. The latest update has Begich ahead by 814 votes. According to 538.com, the majority of the remaining bugs appear to be from Mark Begich-friendly districts. It is looking more and more likely that another Democrat will be joining Harry Reid and the gang on Capitol Hill. Sweet!
