What are your favorite 10 Stevie Wonder Tunes? (Updated)

Since Stevie Wonder had his 65th birthday this week, I think it would be a GREAT exercise to post his 10 best tunes. Now, these are not necessarily his 10 most popular, but your favorite. Let me start this exercise by saying I love Stevie Wonder. He is one of my favorite artists of all time. I have seen him in concert twice. He was fabulous. I can also say that on some ballads I think he can whine. He can be overly rightous at times in some of his protest songs. With that being said, I think he is one of the greatest artists of all time.

I’ll start with one of my all-time favorite Stevie tunes – “Higher Ground.” There are certain tunes that leap off the vinyl, the CD or MP3. This is one of those tunes.

Simply my favorite artist of all time

I have only heard Stevie Wonder live twice. But man oh, man. When Stevie Wonder was at the top of his game, no one could touch him. He had a string of four albums which may be the best four albums that anyone has ever put together. I know that I’m using a lot of hyperbole but…Talking Book, Innervisions, Forfillingness First Finale and Songs in the Key of Life simply speak for themselves. Yes, he put out some sap. But he more than made up for that with outstanding tunes that leaped off the record. In his tribute to Bob Marley the song is actually done in Marley’s reggae fashion. It was brilliant. His tribute to Duke Ellington is one of the classic rhythm-and-blues tunes of all time. Again, Stevie uses horns in a similar fashion to the Great Duke Ellington. He mirrors Ellington’s writing style yet makes it pure Stevie. Enjoy!
