The Disaster That is Myanmar


How can the news of more than 50 thousand dead be any worse? Well, have a military government that is trying to stay in power– that’s how to make a bad situation worse. The government has taken U.N. aid for itself, not the affected citizens. As a result, the U.N. is pulling out. If that isn’t bad enough, the U.S. and other western countries have not been allowed in to help.

Update: It looks like the U.N. is being allowed back into the country. This is madness.

Hiding under a blanket in the back of a car at a police checkpoint. Hopping on boats instead of staying on a road. Constantly looking over your shoulder, knowing that at any moment you — and those with you — face the possibility of imprisonment, torture, even death.

It sounds like a spy movie. But CNN’s Dan Rivers, who sneaked into storm-ravaged Myanmar without the knowledge of the nation’s secretive ruling junta, says the reality is even more frightening than it appears on the silver screen. (more…)
