What’s going on in London?

As I wait for news from the Wisconsin recount, I continue to drift over to the London story. Although London has been relatively quiet, sporadic outbursts of violence has erupted all over England. I’m kind of confused. What’s going on?

From the BBC:

Sporadic violence has broken out in several cities around England, although London remained largely quiet with a heavy police presence on the streets.

With 16,000 police officers deployed in London, the streets remained calm after three previous nights of rioting.

But there was unrest in cities including Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Nottingham and Birmingham with shops being looted and set alight.

The PM is recalling Parliament over Monday night’s “sickening scenes”.

Forty seven people have been arrested so far over trouble in Manchester and Salford where crowds of youths have set fire to buildings and cars while 87 have been arrested over disorder which has broken out across the West Midlands.

  1. I’m thinking that in light of what I just read a few days ago in the column by Charles Blow http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/06/opinion/the-decade-of-lost-children.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss that we probably shouldn’t expect too much different here in the good old profoundly unequal USA.

Young people without hope, abandoned by society, who see a world of SHRINKING opportunities at the same time they witness the elite few living in unimaginable splendor…  Well, it isn’t a positive reaction, it won’t solve anything and will likely make things much worse, but force people to live in pain long enough and they will eventually lash out.
