I have said it before and I’ll say it again – How can you have a fair trial if 3 of your lawyers get killed during the trial?
Excellent discussion on this by Glenn Greenwald who has been a consistent legal voice of reason.

Yes, some of his lawyers were killed – as were several judges and members of their families.
There is no doubt that the man was a mass murderer of epic proportions.
I’m glad he is dead. Should have happened 30 years ago.
ackk…
What is wrong with people like this guy? He is all concerned that Saddam did not receive a fair trial. Does he have any concern at all for the thousands upon thousands of Saddam’s victims?……
I think there is no doubt that Saddam was one of the biggest mass murderers of all time. He did deserve to die. This is clear.
If the US decided that he needed to die and took him out with a cruise missile or a sniper with a high powered rifle that would have been fine with me. Instead, we decided to trial the man. Okay, if we are going to try a madman and murderer, we should have done it right. There should have been no stone unturned. Everyone should have been able to look at the case and decide that it was a fair trial, like we did for the Nazi trials. That’s my point. We would have set an example for the world of how justice is done.
Thanks for your comments.
Interesting clip. Was the trail fair? Depends. The trail was more fair than any in Iraq over the last 40 years. The main question is was the trail just? Was Saddam guilty? Even his own defense attorney doesn’t argue for Saddam’s innocence.
I think that his trial should have set an example of justice…American Justice and unfortunately it didn’t.
Yes, it is a good thing that Saddam is not torturing the Kurds or the Shiites.
Bush went into office to finish what his daddy couldn’t and ignorant Americans want justice for terrorist attacks and 9-11 but I haven’t heard anyone ask the most important question: Where’s BIN LADEN?? Oh come on, you know, the guy who “actually” ordered those planes into the trade centers.
I cannot walk into your home and tell you how to raise your children so what makes America the Super Cop to tell a dictator how to rule his country?? His massacre was against a race of people that were plotting his assassination and while America trumps up Conspiracy charges other countries are accustomed to what’s NOT OUR BUSINESS!! I am Catholic Iraqi and while CNN blind sides Americans; our families give us first hand “news” on Iraq and since you think you can sleep better at night knowing a ruler who did in fact help many people in his time was hung while Jeffrey Dahmer and BTK were sentenced to Prison. Saddam did one thing that Bush never could and never will… His country was in order!! People lived together despite their differences. America steps in and now we can watch the death toll rise. And for what?? Of course, the oil.
Where do we draw the line? Can we hang the Chinese leader because the Chinese cannot exercise their right to reproduce? Can we blow up Amsterdam because Marijuana is illegal in America?
We wonder where racism stems from?? I was once all about equality and not judging but after this and after the horror stories of my own family dying at the hands of American troops and Muslim extremist, you can’t help but want to avoid the interaction. Troops should pull out and save their lives because this is going to a long war. While eliminating Saddam we have brought someone who just may be worse!
Thanks Nancy for you comments. I think that you will find that Saddam was a brutal dictator. He crushed dissent with ruthless efficiency. If you remember the famous video of when he first took power. He called out those who spoke out against him in their national assembly Hall. He had them taken out by his secret police one by one. Finally, grown men were crying and begging forgiveness.
Saddam Hussein killed tens of thousands of Shiites and Kurds. He killed them in a variety of ways. He gassed them. He shot them. He starved them.
Saddam Hussein will go down in history amongst the most despicable dictator’s like Pol Pot, Stalin, Hitler and Idi Amin.
President Bush does not belong in this category. He is incompetent. He does only look out for his rich and elite friends. He has started an unnecessary war but not because he was evil. He started the war because he was incompetent and idealistic.
Thanks again for your comments, Nancy.
