From CNN.com:
House Majority Leader John Boehner’s call for critics to lay off Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld because the generals are responsible for the conduct of the war in Iraq has sparked outrage among Democrats.
In an interview Wednesday on CNN, Boehner said, “Let’s not blame what’s happening in Iraq on Rumsfeld.”
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer replied, “But he’s in charge of the military.”
“The fact is, the generals on the ground are in charge, and he works closely with them and the president,” Boehner, an Ohio Republican, said. more

This is the best political stunt yet. Rumsfeld is not to blame for Iraq. I’m laughing while I type this. Look to see how this plays. If it goes over even lukewarm, you will see the Vice-President and Condi begin to use it. Snow may even whip it out (no not that!!) at a press conference.
Of course, this is not true. Rumsfeld by all thoughtful accounts has NOT let the generals do anything without his approval. He has silented the Joint Chiefs. He decided exactly how many troops would be deployed. He decided which unit would go and when they would go. This has been clearly Rumsfeld’s war. Rummy even chose Brummer and Garner before him.
Boehner is way off the mark with this one.
Way off base, yet completely in stride with a leader of a party that refuses to take responsibility for any of their actions. It’s always somebody else’s fault. Mexicans. Terrorists. The media. Irresistable pages. Childhood trauma. Alcohol. Meh.
Accountability, people. That’s what’s needed.
