Comparing Barack Obama to Donald Trump simply isn’t fair. It is almost laughable.Yet because Donald Trump lashes out so often, it’s hard not to compare the two men.
Barack Obama is a family man. He loves his wife. His wife loves him. That was more than evident in her speech at the new presidential library. Her speech was so good and so touching that it made me cry.
I don’t need to say anything about Trump and his wives. I have no idea if any of them loved him.
I would like to simply focus on being President. Let’s just zero in on Iran.
The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—commonly known as Obama’s Iran Deal—and President Trump’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on June 17, 2026, represent fundamentally different approaches to U.S.-Iran relations.
While the Obama-era deal was a multilateral, preventative diplomatic accord aimed entirely at capping a nuclear program, the 2026 Trump deal is a bilateral ceasefire and interim framework designed to end an active hot war, restore maritime commerce, and establish a 60-day window to negotiate a permanent treaty. There is NO agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, which was the whole purpose of this conflict.
A side-by-side comparison of the two frameworks highlights the key differences:
1. Scope and Strategic Context
- Obama’s Iran Deal (2015 JCPOA): This was strictly a nuclear non-proliferation agreement. It focused entirely on blocking Iran’s pathways to a nuclear weapon.
- Trump’s Latest Deal (2026 MOU): This is a wartime termination framework. It mandates an immediate, permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts—including the conflict in Lebanon. It addresses active combat, military blockades, and regional security directly alongside the nuclear issue.
2. Parties Involved
- Obama’s Iran Deal (2015 JCPOA): A multilateral agreement negotiated between Iran and the P5+1 (the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany) and endorsed by the United Nations Security Council.
- Trump’s Latest Deal (2026 MOU): A direct bilateral agreement negotiated primarily between the United States and Iran (with regional mediators like Oman and Pakistan). Key regional actors, including Israel, are not formal signatories to the text.
3. Nuclear Restrictions and Enriched Uranium
- Obama’s Iran Deal (2015 JCPOA): Imposed strict, highly specific limits for 10 to 15 years. It forced Iran to cap uranium enrichment at 3.67%, reduce its centrifuge stockpile by two-thirds, and ship 98% of its enriched uranium out of the country (primarily to Russia).
- Trump’s Latest Deal (2026 MOU): Rather than shipping material out, the interim terms call for Iran to down-blend (dilute) its stockpile of highly enriched uranium on Iranian soil under IAEA supervision. Iran commits broadly not to develop nuclear weapons, but the exact long-term restrictions on enrichment and facilities are frozen at the current status quo to be negotiated during a 60-day clock. The U.S. is pushing for a 20-year ban, while Iran is targeting 10 years.
4. Sanctions Relief and Economic Terms
- Obama’s Iran Deal (2015 JCPOA): Offered phased, comprehensive relief from nuclear-related UN, EU, and U.S. secondary sanctions. This relief was granted only after the IAEA independently verified that Iran had successfully dismantled and restricted its nuclear infrastructure.
- Trump’s Latest Deal (2026 MOU): Grants immediate upfront relief via U.S. Treasury waivers allowing Iran to freely export crude oil, petroleum products, and access associated banking/shipping services. However, the total, permanent termination of broader sanctions remains strictly tied to the successful execution of a final nuclear settlement at the end of the 60-day period. Additionally, the deal outlines a future $300 billion reconstruction and economic development plan funded alongside regional partners.
5. Maritime Security and Blockades
- Obama’s Iran Deal (2015 JCPOA): Did not feature explicit provisions regarding maritime blockades or the physical freedom of navigation in regional waters, as the U.S. and Iran were not in an active naval conflict at the time.
- Trump’s Latest Deal (2026 MOU): Focuses heavily on restoring commercial shipping. It demands that the United States fully lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports within 30 days. In exchange, Iran must immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz toll-free for 60 days, which includes clearing naval mines and other military/technical obstructions to restore pre-war shipping volumes.
6. Enforcement and Duration
- Obama’s Iran Deal (2015 JCPOA): Built upon a permanent framework of intrusive, round-the-clock IAEA monitoring and surprise inspections (via the Additional Protocol), backed by a “snapback” mechanism to automatically reimpose UN sanctions if Iran violated the deal.
- Trump’s Latest Deal (2026 MOU): Functions as a temporary 60-day pause to hammer out a final treaty. It relies heavily on deterrence; President Trump explicitly noted that the MOU is an interim understanding, warning that if final terms are not reached or if compliance fails, the U.S. reserves the right to immediately resume military operations and bombing campaigns.
There is no comparison. In Obama’s plan, there wasn’t a single shot fired. He included the international community. He proposed a plan that was easily verifiable. Our own intelligence services stated that the plan was working as intended.
People have died because Donald Trump couldn’t stand the fact that Barack Obama had negotiated a framework that was working. As a result, we have bombed a school. We have sunk Navy warships. We have bombed innumerable targets and yet Iran still stands. We have no idea about their nuclear capabilities. We have slowed the world economy because of the Strait of Hormuz. Basically, Donald Trump has caused global pain and suffering. If I’m reading this agreement correctly, we are going to pay hundreds of billions of dollars to rebuild a country we just bombed.
The opening of the Obama Presidential Library has once again shown us how GREAT Barack Obama is/was.
