For years, Americans have wanted universal healthcare, then the money attacking universal healthcare started rolling in.
From NYT:
In all, about $235 million has been spent on ads attacking the law since its passage in March 2010, according to a recent survey by Kantar Media’s Campaign Media Analysis Group. Only $69 million has been spent on advertising supporting it. Just $700,000 of that comes from the Obama campaign, and none of its ads mentioning the law are currently being broadcast, said Elizabeth Wilner, vice president of the Campaign Media Analysis Group. “It explains, in a nutshell, why polling shows attitudes about the law to be at best mixed,” she said.
Over the last several years, Republicans have been pushing the idea that Americans don’t want universal health insurance. Nothing can be further from the truth. The truth is that Americans have been convinced by negative ads that whatever Obama has tried to do isn’t going to work and will hurt the American people and the economy. The bottom line is that advertising works. Americans can be convinced almost anything. This seems to include that universal healthcare is evil and will ultimately destroy the American way of life.
If Democrats would like to win anything in the future, they are going to have to win the advertising war. It is that simple.
There are a large number of people that hate ANYTHING Obama says or does. It doesn’t matter. After watching if for 4 years I am convinced much of it is deep racism. But I agree with you there have been others influenced by the steady stream of false and scary advertising by insurance groups and others on the right. One of the great hypocrisies of our times is how they are against the individual mandate and they are against helping out people in need (lazy bums). Yet without the mandate that is exactly what they are doing except its paid for in higher hospital costs and insurance premiums. Well you know this already being in the field.
Remember that it was Republicans that purposed the individual mandate back in the 90’s when Clinton was trying to get something going. They loved it then, it is unconstitutional now.
