Amendment One is one of worst pieces of legislation that I’ve read in a long time. It will take years to undo the damage that has been done today. In my opinion, I don’t think that we need to add discrimination to our state constitution. Unfortunately a majority of North Carolinians disagreed with me. They believed that it’s okay to discriminate. They believed that women don’t deserve the same rights as men. They believe if your loved one is in the hospital you shouldn’t have an opportunity to talk to the doctor about your loved one or even visit your loved one in the hospital unless you’re in a heterosexual relationship. Or they were simply misinformed.

I continually remind myself that Thurgood Marshall did not wake up one day in 1954 and decide it was a good day to take the school board of Topeka to the Supreme Court instead he fought a series of long hard battles which culminated in Brown versus the Board of Education. This is a long road. Breaking down long held beliefs will take time.

One day, all men and women in the United States will enjoy the same rights whether they are White, Black, gay, lesbian or whatever. Unfortunately, that day is not today.
