News Roundup – Syria, Jobs

It has been a while since I have had a news roundup. Sorry. I have fallen down on the job. First, on a personal note, a couple of years ago, I thought that I could get out of medicine. So, I thought that I should/could buy a building. I would broadcast from the building and rent out some space to help cover costs. I put pen to paper and found a great building. I looked for financing and started negotiating. We got to a price that was somewhat less than outrageous and then the fun began. To make a long story short, I couldn’t get financing and wanted to back out of the contract. The owner of the building said no, I couldn’t get out of the contract. I couldn’t back out. He wanted me to buy the building by hook or by crook. Soon thereafter the lawsuits started flying. I was being sued for over a million dollars. I had to retain my own lawyer. (Did you know good lawyers are expensive??? I mean really expensive.) So, the owner of the building sold the building for more than I had offered. I thought that the lawsuit would be dropped. Nope. He still wanted his money. Now, however, he only wanted $100,000. He was wronged. 18 months later. Thousands of dollars later. The lawsuit was dropped at last. This ends one of the craziest chapters in my life. The one thing that I have learned is that a good lawyer is worth the money. 🙂

Syria chemical attacks

Syria. Well, damn. So, here’s what we have been told. Syria had used chemical weapons against its people before. Syria attacked its people with chemical weapons. We know from where the missiles were launched and we know where the missiles landed. We know that Syria shelled the area in order to destroy evidence. At least this is what we were told by John Kerry today. I hate to say it, but we were told that we knew that Iraq had nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. We were told that Iraq was a threat to the US. These statements were lies. Is the Obama administration lying to the American people? If we know all of this, why don’t the British know the same things? Why didn’t Prime Minister David Cameron present this information to Parliament? (I admit that I don’t know what he presented. All I know is that he didn’t convince Parliament that any type of military action was necessary.) Continue reading News Roundup – Syria, Jobs

Ratification of the New START Treaty is Stuck in the Senate

As usual, I don’t understand Republican obstructionism. The new START treaty needs to be ratified. What is their thoughtful objection?

From TP:

Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) has become the face of GOP obstruction regarding President Obama’s push for the Senate to ratify the New START nuclear arms control treaty with Russia. Without the treaty in place, the U.S. has no legal authority to monitor Russia’s nuclear arsenal. And if New START isn’t ratified, not only will U.S.-Russian relations suffer but so will American credibility on issues such as Iran and nonproliferation. “The world’s nuclear wannabes, starting with Iran, should send a thank you note to Senator Jon Kyl,” the New York Times editorialized this week referring to Kyl’s obstruction. Today on MSNBC, Sen. Rich Lugar (R-IN) urged Republicans such as Kyl to support the treaty and called on Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to hold a vote on it in this lame-duck session of Congress:

LUGAR: Please do your duty for your country. We do not have verification of the Russian nuclear posture right now. We’re not going to have it until we sign the START treaty. We’re not going to be able to get rid of further missiles and warheads aimed at us. I state it candidly to my colleagues, one of those warheads…could demolish my city of Indianapolis — obliterate it! Now Americans may have forgotten that. I’ve not forgotten it and I think that most people who are concentrating on the START treaty want to move ahead to move down the ladder of the number of weapons aimed at us.

More on the New START treaty here, here and here.

Traveling needs regulation and other stuff

There was a time in this country when a snowstorm didn’t throw airline travel into a tailspin for two or three days. The Atlanta airport was just crazy… more on this later.

  • Rick Santelli’s rant that got so much publicity may have been planned. Right wing billionaires were probably behind it. Read on.  It is sad when you look at a billion dollars in your account and you think, “Damn, I must have more by any means necessary.”
  • Democratic presidents create jobs. Now, even the Wall Street Journal believes this fact.
  • The Dow fell below 7000 for the first time since 1997. I just know Republicans are going to blame Obama for this awful economic crisis.
  • Bush lawyers made many errors in early counter-terrorism documents according to new memos released today. I’m not surprised. Bush wasn’t interested in the process. He just wanted a result.
  • Barack Obama has offered Russia a deal in order to get Russia to help with Iran. We want Iran to stop pushing for long-ranged missiles and nuclear weapons and Russia wants us to stop Star Wars. Obama basically offered them a compromise. We will cut back on development of SDI if they lean on Iran. This could be a great deal for us. We have been throwing billions of dollars into a program that I don’t think has ever worked. Maybe it has worked to some degree, but is it keeping us safe? I don’t think so.
