By his early 20s he was being recognized as a showman and an excellence musician. By 1930, he’d landed a permanent job with his band at the infamous Cotton Club in New York (supplanting Duke Ellington’s band). In 1931, he and his manager, Irvin Mills, wrote the hit “Minnie the Moocher”. Enjoy.
