Obama speaks on the Orlando Shooting

From CNN.com:

Orlando shooting suspect Omar Mateen was interviewed by the FBI in 2013 and 2014, FBI Assistant Special Agent Ronald Hopper told reporters Sunday. “Those interviews turned out to be inconclusive, so there was nothing to keep the investigation going,” Hopper said. Mateen was not under investigation at the time of Sunday’s shooting and was not under surveillance, Hopper said.
An American-born man who’d pledged allegiance to ISIS gunned down 50 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando — the deadliest mass shooting in the United States and the nation’s worst terror attack since 911, authorities said Sunday.
* The gunman was Omar Mateen of Fort Pierce, Florida, a law enforcement source told CNN.
* Mateen called 911 around the time of the attack to pledge allegiance to ISIS and mentioned the Boston bombers, according to a U.S. official.
* Orlando police shot and killed Mateen.
Mateen carried an assault rifle and a pistol into the packed Pulse club about 2 a.m. Friday and started shooting, killing 50 people and wounding at least 53, police said. After a standoff of about three hours, police crashed into the building with an armored vehicle and killed Mateen.
“It appears he was organized and well-prepared,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said early Sunday. Authorities have not described finding any accomplices.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack on jihadi forums, but ISIS sympathizers have reacted by praising the attack on pro-Islamic State forums.
“We know enough to say this was an act of terror and act of hate,” President Obama said in an address to the nation from the White House. (more…)

News Roundup – Tay, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Brussels, Apple verses the DOJ

microsoft

So, Microsoft releases its artificial intelligence bot, named Tay, on social media yesterday. What could possibly go wrong? From WSJ – One tweet from Tay, whose persona was intended to mimic the voice of an American woman aged 18 to 24, read, “Hitler was right I hate the Jews.” Another, in response to a question about the Holocaust, said “it was made up,” followed by a hand-clapping emoji. Microsoft silenced Tay on Thursday morning and erased virtually all of its tweets. The latest tweet suggested that Tay will be offline for a bit.

I’m sorry. I think that the Democratic Party needs to return to its roots, representing the average American. This means not sucking up to big corporate donors. This also means doing right by average Americans. So, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, someone I really liked 10 years ago, and Rahm Emmanuel need to be put out to pasture. They don’t promote Democratic values.

The bombings in Brussels are simply sad.  Today, as I was walking around the hospital, I heard a couple nurses saying that it was okay to travel, but that they wouldn’t travel outside the US. That’s just silly. I’m not going to let ISIS tell me where I should and should not travel. (I’m not going to Syria or Yemen or Iraq.) Who are these guys? Jahadi Cool?

The ongoing battle between the Justice Department and Apple really shows us that Congress ain’t working. Congress should have taken up this issue months ago. They should have, by now, hammered out a solution. (The solution in my mind would be to have on a case-by-case basis all of these issues go before the FISA court.) Instead, as far as I know, Congress hasn’t done squat. Apple is fighting to get the government off their backs and off of the backs of all of the technology companies. They don’t want to hand over data or anything else with the government stating that bad guys will get away if you don’t hand over the goods. (BTW, I suspect that Apple has already broken the code and could open that phone right now.) The FBI is trying to break into the phone now. This whole process would be easier if we had a Congress that worked.

Oh, so, I’m liking the ridiculous discussion between Trump and Cruz about whose wife is hotter.

Wage inequality is still a big problem.

The NFL has known about the concussion risk for years. Is anyone surprised?

Garry Shandling is dead at age 66. He made millions laugh. RIP.

Happy Thanksgiving – News Roundup

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope that you and your family have a wonderful day.

If you did not say, “I told you so,” then you probably should have. Who did not see this problem with Russia and NATO coming from a mile away? So, Turkey downs a Russian jet that Turkey claims was over Turkish airspace. Surviving Russian pilot states that there was no warning. Tell me this isn’t a prescription for badness!

Some folks in France are ready to fight! But here’s the question, fight whom? And where? It would be great if everyone from ISIS would gather in one place and label themselves with a red “I hate America” tattoo. But it will never be that easy. There are several groups that are willing to fight ISIS, but are they going to better or worse than ISIS if they are put in power? More on how to move forward here.

One of my friends posted something a few months ago about race relations. He stated that it was as bad as he had ever seen it. I smiled. During the ’50s and ’60s, there was major progress in race relations. From the election of Reagan to the present we have been stagnant or moving backwards. This is a fact. This is a direct result of conservatives talking about reverse discrimination and an economy that has left Blacks and Hispanics out in the cold. The unrest in Washington and Missouri is a direct result of people not understanding where someone else is coming from. Empathy is what is sorely missing in our society.

Ben Carson continues to get facts wrong.

Donald Trump is still pushing the envelope to get more press coverage.

Ted Cruz is gaining support in Iowa.

Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy your day with your family and friends. Go Cowboys!!!
