Thursday Evening News Roundup
Another school shooting. Another student who felt that he’d been “bullied” or alienated. Another death. A teacher and a “school staffer” stood face-to-face with the gunman and talked the student into giving up his gun. (695 Americans have died since the Sandy Hook Shooting.)
In what can only be described as a complete waste of the vice president’s time, Joe Biden met with National Rifle Association officials. It should not come as a complete shock that the NRA plans to oppose any gun control measures.
Today, I was a guest on Local Edge Radio. We had a very passionate young man call in and support the rights of gun owners. He clearly stated that he did not believe that the Second Amendment supported your right to protect yourself and your family or your right to hunt with a gun. Instead, he insisted that the Second Amendment was put in place for us to be able to protect ourselves against an oppressive government. Therefore, we, the citizens of the United States, needed to have access to whatever kind of firepower the military had access to. I foolishly asked if that meant that we should have access to tanks, antiaircraft weapons and bazookas. He said yes. I would put this gentleman forward as someone who represents the extreme right on the gun issue. 🙂 Continue reading Thursday Evening News Roundup
Finally, I was able to catch up with Bill Scher from Liberal Oasis and Campaign for America’s Future for this podcast. (Please read Bill’s must-read post on how to get jobs back on the table.)Bill is one of the fabulous progressives. We discuss the fact that President Barack Obama appears to be holding the winning hand with debt ceiling negotiations coming up. We talk about Benghazi. Every time the Republicans try to make a big deal out of Benghazi, it seems to blow up in their faces. Such was the case with Mitt Romney and, most recently, Charles Krauthammer, who stated that Hillary Clinton had a case of Benghazi allergy, which is why she didn’t testify in front of Congress. Bill correctly points out that Benghazi is not a scandal. Instead, it shows the difficulty in balancing what an Embassy is supposed to do – security versus being with the people. One of the things that seems to be overlooked is that President Barack Obama is now promoting a foreign-policy that is fostering democracy in many countries that once were dictatorships. (I wonder why Fox News isn’t talking about this.) Listen to this podcast. It is extremely entertaining.
I would like to thank Bill Scher for being on the show and I’d also like to thank my co-host Vonciel for tolerating my Bogarting the microphone.
Sadly, Blake Butler has left Local Edge Radio. Vonciel is holding down the fort. She asked me to co-host. I invited a couple of my friends to call in. I’m ecstatic that Greg Dworkin, pediatrician and Newtown, Connecticut resident, called in. We talked about gun violence. We talked about how gun violence is different in rural communities, where the violence is mainly suicides, versus urban communities, which suffer from homicide gun violence. One of the things that Greg stressed was that we need to begin to seriously address the problems with registration of guns. He mentioned that even cars are registered. Even if you buy a car from a private person, that car is registered by the state. Why can’t we do the same for guns? This is the question of gun control. We need to have a thoughtful, intelligent conversation that respects the rights of hunters and gun owners, yet recognizes that we have a problem. We need to write our senators. We need to keep the pressure on.
I would like to thank Greg Dworkin, MD for coming on Local Edge Radio on such short notice.
