Compromise? There won’t be any stinkin’ compromise!

So, over the last two or three days, the mainstream media has asked multiple different Republicans, "Are you going to compromise with the president?" Many people tripped over themselves trying to come up with an answer. I think the answer is clear, that there will be no compromise. The Republicans have just been rewarded for being the most obstructionist group in recent memory. They opposed healthcare, they opposed Wall Street reform, they even opposed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. They opposed the rescue plan to save GM and Chrysler. They opposed the stimulus package, which saved or created millions of jobs. The calculus was simple – oppose and obstruct anything that can move the country forward. Success for the president means Democratic votes down the line and we, the Republicans, can't have that.

President Barack Obama said on Wednesday afternoon that he thought that he could work together with the Republicans on energy legislation. I did not fall off my chair laughing, although I almost did. Energy legislation? Maybe, since the president had recently been on The Daily Show, he was joking. There is zero chance that the Republicans are going to "compromise" on energy legislation. The oil companies and their lobbyists have bathed the Republican Party in a sea of money. There will be no compromise on energy legislation.

The Republicans for the last 30 years have undergone a significant transformation. There was a time when you could find liberal and moderate Republicans walking around Congress. Unfortunately, they have gone the way of the dodo bird. There are no moderate Republicans anymore, at least not in Congress. Let's think about how congressmen and senators get elected. They start in the local neighborhoods. They talk about issues and ask for donations. If you're talking to a conservative group and you want to get them fired up so that they will reach deep into their pockets, you need to touch on those hot button items. The more you talk about the need for tax cuts, immigration reform and more defense spending, the more money will be thrown your way. Before you know it, your platform is extremely conservative. There is no room for moderation. This is what we have in Congress. We have conservatives and ultraconservatives. Both varieties of the conservative movement look at compromise as a sign of weakness. It is a sign of a complete lack of moral character, no conviction. Therefore, the only compromise that we've seen over the last 15 or 20 years is when progressives move further to the right.

Remember the words of Rush Limbaugh, "I hope Obama fails."

Instead of recognizing the huge election losses as a call for a change in the direction of his policies, Obama simply says that Americans aren't bright enough to understand what he's done. "we were so busy and so focused on getting a bunch of stuff done that we stopped paying attention to the fact that we yeah, leadership isn't just legislation. That it's a matter of persuading people. And giving them confidence and bringing them together. And setting a tone. And making an argument that people can understand. And I think that we haven't always been successful at that." Translation: "We did everything right. The people just didnt understand it. I guess I need to explain it to them better." What arrogance.

The only arrogance I see here is by your Mr. White. I find nothing arrogant on Obama's quote. They did focus on the legislation and allowed Republicans and others like you to bitch and moan without offering any solutions of their own. But as Democrats often do they screwed up the message. He is admiting an error, something GWBush never did. Now do I think they did perfect legislation. Nope. They should have reached across the aisle and worked together. That is the real message the votes wanted. And they won't get it again. The Tea Party backed simple minded won't compromise and we will have no good progress.

Obama lost over 1/2 of the moderate Democrat seats, indicating that the majority of independent and moderate voters walked away from him. And his response is "I am soooooooo misunderstood". Yeah, it's arrogant. And sad that folks like you so easily buy into it.

Jeff, Joe is the party of me, myself and I. You can't reason with them they are only concerned about what they want. It is a give me scenario. Seen alot lately. A lady on NPR was recanting a discussion she was having with a friend about the tax cuts. She felt that the rich need to keep the money and decide who gets what not the legislature. That they need a lower class to have to fight the wars for them. Now how about that mentality.

Interesting article. "Obama calls for compromise, won't budge on tax cuts By Kevin Cullum - 11/06/10 06:00 AM ET Days after Democrats received a self-described "shellacking" at the polls, President Obama called for an end to campaigning and an embrace of compromise. But he signaled no willingness to bend on the first challenge likely to face him from a Republican House as he advocated the permanent extension of Bush-era tax cuts for families making less than $250,000 a year despite the GOP's resolve to extend the tax cuts for all income brackets." http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/127983-obama-calls-for-compromise-wont-budge-on-tax-cuts

Obama wanted to let all of the bush tax cut expire. He moved to the Right by keeping the tax cuts for the middle class. He has already compromised. The Republican/conservative position has always been to keep all of the tax cuts in place. So, correctly stated, Obama won't budge off his compromise position.

http://moravings.blogspot.com/2010/11/obama-bashing-has-already-begun-and-it.html In addition to this--no compromise--John Boehner said, when asked if he/they would take any impeachment possibilities off the table, as the Democrats did with Geo. W. Bush, in spite of the overwhelming evidence of their worth at the time, said that, no, they would not take impeachment "off the table". Idiots. Selfish, self-serving idiots.

Forget Obama for a moment. If evidence concerning any President shows them to be unqualified to serve, why do you think they should not be removed from office?

How do you measure unqualified to serve? As you saying for example, the president has a massive stroke? There is no constitutional remedy outside of impeachment.

This is why it was important for California to not pass Prop 23. The oil companies would have had free reins again. But in California the refineries have to cut their emissions or get fined in another few years. They set the standards for the rest of the country. They did with the cars and they are creating green jobs faster than any other state. I wonder if the Federal Government is going to try and stop them again. One minute they speak state rights but if it touches their favorite pet project they try and over ride them. You would think Joe would be a happy person with the republicans winning but he still isn't at all. He isn't even going to give them a chance at cutting the budgets without complaining they aren't doing it fast enough. I don't think he trusts anybody and that is sad. Maybe something will trickle down to him and other people that are never happy. The public will give these guys a chance for only so long and we will see what they can do.

"Therefore, the only compromise that we’ve seen over the last 15 or 20 years is when progressives move farther to the right." This isnt something we see just with conservatives. Why dont you simply admit that liberals are as reluctant to compromise as conservatives? There's plenty of evidence of that in the past 2 years especially.

because it would be a lie. I try not to lie. It is something that my parents taught me.
