Black Friday Madness

I don’t understand why people stand out in the cold and rush to buy Christmas gifts. It is almost like group hysteria or hypnosis. I can’t imagine that the aggravation that comes with elbowing your fellow neighbors is worth it.

From AP:

A woman shot pepper spray to keep shoppers from merchandise she wanted during a Black Friday sale, and 20 people suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly after 10:20 p.m. Thursday in a crowded Los Angeles-area Walmart as shoppers hungry for deals were let inside the store.
Police said the suspect shot the pepper spray when the coverings over the items she wanted were removed.

“Somehow she was trying to use it to gain an upper hand,” police Lt. Abel Parga told The Associated Press early Friday.

I don’t get it either , but apparently our economy is hooked on it . Consumer spending is what makes us or breaks us .
Could you imagine if we were organized to the point of having a national moritorium on consumer spending say on black friday , in protest of our crony capitalism . Perhaps then Washington would have to admit that there is a problem with money in politics .

Pepper spraying is likely to become a more and more common response to feelings of stress and aggression.  The images of the Occupy victims of excessive force have entered the public mind; many of us are consciously saying “that is NOT right”, some are subconsciously thinking “if someone messes with me that’s what I’m going to do to THEM”.  Thanks, Administration of UC Davis.  You’ve helped us all take some big steps towards increased violence.
