The Pledge of Allegiance and Barack Obama

Obama and the pledge; from Time

I figured that I would leave the Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama tiff for a little while. I received a comment on my blog in which the reader asked how Oprah could endorse Barack Obama when he wouldn’t even put his hand over his heart when saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

This stems from an e-mail that has been circulating for several months. The e-mail goes something like this: “He refused to not only put his hand on his heart during the pledge of allegiance, but refused to say the pledge” a chain email with the picture of Obama said, “how in the hell can a man like this expect to be our next Commander-in-Chief?”

First of all, how stupid would Barack Obama have to be to openly do something that would alienate so many voters? I mean it’s just not plausible. This is clearly some neoconservative garbage that is drummed up to give a certain type of voter a question about Barack Obama’s patriotism. These are same neoconservatives that spread the rumor that he spent several years in a madrasah. This also is not true. These are the same groups of people that stresshis middle name is Hussein. Some of the far right-wing radio show hosts have even called him “Barack Saddam Hussein Obama.” Clearly not his name.

This picture was taken at Senator Tom Harkin’s annual steak fry. The participants were not reciting the Pledge of Allegiance but instead they were standing for the national anthem. This is not the first time nor will it be the last time that the patriotism police will attract Barack Obama or any other Democratic candidate. Remember the big brouhaha over the fact that Barack Obama did not wear a USA flag lapel pin?

Barack Obama like all of the candidates running for president is a true patriot. He has put himself on the line because he believes that he has a vision for the future of America. He’s exposed both himself and his family to this type of retarded criticism.

Finally, I would guess that Oprah Winfrey would not be stupid enough to endorse a candidate that wasn’t a patriot. Oprah tends to have her ducks in a row when she does something.

§171. Conduct during playing

During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

  1. Sorry, but the law governing public behavior (passed in 1998) clearly states that an individual must stand and place their hand over their heart when listening to the National Anthem. Instead, Barack had his hands cupped over his %$&#’s, and was swaying back and forth in the video. He was clearly disrespectful and we should expect better behavior from our leaders. If our leaders cannot obey the law, how can they expect their constituents to do so?

And Obama is dead wrong – after 200 years of men, the only really change is a woman!

  2. As for Oprah, she’s been living with a guy for 20 years that she doesn’t have the decency to marry, she’s never adopted or even fostered a child with all her money, and she only got involved in charity work for Africa after white people (like Bob Geldof, Bono, Angie Jolie, and Bill and Melinda Gates) shamed her into it (Geldof has been working for African causes since the mid-1980’s – remember Live Aid?). Oh, and Oprah throws hissy fits when a store won’t reopen to cater to her majesty. Sorry, anyone Oprah backs has got to be as narcissistic as she is.

  3. W –

I’m sorry but Oprah has fostered or maybe a better term is mentored several children here in the states. I’m not sure where you got your information on that.

The point of the picture was the Right had suggested that the Pledge of Allegiance was being played. It wasn’t. Plus if it was the National Anthem isn’t everyone suppose to face the flag? Isn’t that in the same statute? In case you are wondering the answer is yes. Everyone in that picture was wrong. They were suppose to face the flag.

Thanks for your comments. Oh and send me a link to that video so I can see it.

  4. Yes, it is a horrible offense to not place your hand over your heart when the Anthem is being played. This is a rule that we have slowly beaten into our brains since 1st grade. However, while this photo does hint at a possibly scatterbrained candidate, does it really comment that much on his ability to lead? Shouldn’t we want leaders that don’t stand in a line and snivel “yes, master, yes.” And yes, this breach in protocol is a far cry from the robotic chanting of the senate but, does it truly comment on his patriotism? Shouldn’t ones ACTIONS be what determine your love for and dedication to your country, and not the politically correct placement of your appendages? When did we become so politically correct that one misstep could sway the opinions of the barefoot masses? Yes, not saluting the flag was wrong and horrible and he should go to bed without supper but, is it a worse offense than dishonoring it with wars, recessions and tyranny? Today’s political sphere is filled leaders who salute the flag with one hand and rob the people “for which it stands” with the other hand. Frankly, I’m tired of being politically correct. Time honored traditions and respect ARE important but, they are merely symbolic, superficial and superfluous. We need someone who will salute the flag with both his hand, his heart and his action.
