More on the Conservative Tax Rant

There is a lot to talk about today. I thought the President Obama's speech was outstanding. Many people talked about it (here, here and here). I really don't want to rehash that. Sarah Palin released an eight-minute video yesterday. The contrast between her and President Obama could not have been greater. There was also this national scene of unity in Tucson. I find it interesting that House Majority Leader John Boehner decided, in spite of a presidential invitation, not to attend. He had a scheduling conflict. He had a fundraiser to attend. This wasn't mandatory but I think it reveals one's priorities. I really don't want to talk about his priorities either. I would like to go back to the Conservative Tax Rant. (see my previous post)

(And to think, we left British Rule to avoid so many taxes)

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago.....
And our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt....
We had the largest middle class in the world.....
And Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

We did not leave colonial rule because of "so many taxes." Instead, we left colonial rule because of taxation without representation. Now you could argue that our representatives are not representing us anymore. I think that's a fair argument. Who would you blame for that? It seems to me that you should blame yourself. The fact is that we aren't involved in our political process except for once every 2-4 years where we go and vote. We are unaware of 99% of the votes that are taken in our state capitals or in Washington DC. We simply don't pay attention.

I'm not sure that I want to go back the way it was 100 years ago. There were no cars, there were no trucks. There were no roads. If you wanted to go from point A to point B, you took your trusty horse or you rode the train. Those were your two options. Most houses did not have electricity. Most houses did not have running water. Cholera, pertussis and influenza killed tens of thousands of Americans every year. Whooping Cough, chickenpox and smallpox remained deadly diseases. Most Americans lived on farms. There was no middle class, unless you are going to count farmers as middle-class. As a matter fact, 1911 is right in the middle of the great migration into American cities. Where is the data purporting that we were the most prosperous country in the world in 1911? Maybe Britain was (having tons of colonies gathering raw materials for your factories has to be good for something), but I doubt that anyone would say that the US was the most prosperous country in the world.

America had no national debt because as a nation we were a third world country. It took us another 30 years to catch up to Britain and France. It took us two world wars before we are propelled into the international scene as the top dog.

So, the author suggests that our utopia awaits when we throw off the yoke of all of these taxes. Sweet! All we need to do to attain this utopia is to move back to the farm and start raising chickens and milking cows. Of course, you can raise cattle. This is the utopia that is being offered – no thanks. I'll take my modern medicines, which are highly regulated and which have increased our life expectancy by more than 30 years! I'll take my state and national highway system, which allows me to drive my taxed, highly regulated, seat belted, airbagged, safety glassed, antilock braked, far safer car all across the country. If I decide to fly across the country, there's a high likelihood that my plane will not fall out of the sky because of regulations and taxes. If, when I get to my destination, I decide to go for a swim in the local lake or stream, there's a high likelihood it should not spontaneously ignite because regulations and taxes have cleaned up our waters. Heck, for the most part, I can probably drink out of the lake – but I won't.

This rant, this conservative rant is the conservative movement over the last 40 years in a nutshell. The underlying tone is that government is bad. Nothing can be further from the truth. Too much government can stifle creativity and, a favorite conservative buzzword, innovation. Not enough government can leave the citizens vulnerable to abuses by the powerful. Whether it is poison water, contaminated foods or dangerous products, government protects us from all of these.

More on this rant tomorrow.

Erri, the govt has a role, but a limited role. Govt now has created a nanny state. Since when is "sodium" a cause of "contaminate foods?" Yes, the govt should help keep the food supply safe, but not the insane oversight of "everything food." The Constitution said that govt should be pushed down to the States, but this govt., led by The Annointed One, Obama, is sucking everything up to the Federal level; where is that constitutional? And most folks aren't saying no taxes; they are saying limited, controlled taxes. So you find one guy that proclaims no taxes of any kind. And how in the world do you think that he or anyone else is advocating a return to horse and buggy? The taxes, rules, regulations, mandates, quotas, etc., are choking innovation and freedom (why do you consider "innovation" nothing more than a buzzword?). I would think/hope that you'd be all in favor of innovation; you're acting like it's a bad word. As for planes falling out of the sky without regs and taxes: are you kidding me? Do you think the market would have withstood an air travel market where planes would fall out of the sky? Don't you think that common sense, not to mention consumer demand and corporate logic would have created an air travel industry that did not allow planes to drop to the ground? Why was govt. the reason why the air industry is successful? Yes, the govt has its place, but not 24/7 and omnipresent thru all of our lives; Leave us ALONE!

the prosperity of the 1950s and 1960s didn't come from a hands-off, leave us alone type attitude. It simply didn't. Anyone who tells you different is rewriting history. Let's look at cars. Cars are a lot easier. The free market create antilock brakes? Did the free market create safety glass? Did the free market create and distribute any of the major safety advances that are on cars now? Seatbelts? No, not one. here's the problem with your mantra, there is no and. If we cut taxes by 20%, you say is not enough. If we cut taxes by 50% you'll scream that taxes are killing free enterprise. I know this for a fact because when taxes were at 90% these are exactly the same things that you, conservatives, screamed at the top of your lungs. Taxes now sit in the mid-30% range a 60% drop in your still screaming about taxes. There is no end to how much you will scream or how low you want taxes until they're all gone. Thanks your comments.

well, i can't speak to the safety of automobiles. but the prosperity of the 1950s and 1960s was definitely caused by a hands off attitude. i find it funny that intelligent people cannot see truth... what does taxing do? it takes money from one segment of society and basically gives it to another. and it is transferring the money to the most unproductive part of society. can you honestly say that black people are better off as a result of the entitlement programs? i would say that black people are slaves once more. welfare slaves...they live like animals and as long as they vote for their Democrat masters they will continue to get the pittance in entitlement payments. ever wonder why black people continue to live if wretched crime/drug ridden inner cities? it's quite unbearable if you ask me. . why not pick up and move to california to pick fruit? (like mexicans are doing.) realistically, that's not even a possibility... those receiving entitlements receive far more by simply doing nothing than getting a job. It's not even worth taking a "risk" to attempt such a venture. i'm by not rich but i've done quite well. i've worked for various companies, many start ups... and not a single one was started by a "poor" person. Lay off the taxes and regulations and entrepreneurs will continue to create jobs and make everyone wealthy. they will take the risks that create growth in our economy. but if you let government tax that money away and give it to entitlement recipients, you're just going to get more purchases of toilet paper at costco...and that doesn't create jobs or wealth for anyone.

So you want to return to the 90% top tax rate of the 1950's? Cool. To answer your question - Yes, I can easily say that entitlement programs have made live better for millions. True hunger existed in America. This has been eliminated. This is better.
