Monday Evening Grab Bag

I hope everyone had a safe and merry Christmas!

  • Just spent some quality time at the Asheville airport. It's about half as much fun as you think it is… maybe less.
  • President Barack Obama called the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles to congratulate him on giving Michael Vick a second chance. I just wonder if you or I get fired for doing something stupid whether somebody will take a chance on us. I hope so.
  • When you are in panic mode you probably don't make your best decisions. The federal government was in panic mode two years ago when they decided to come up with the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). It should be no surprise to anyone that the program has not worked all that well. It turns out that many of the banks that were bailed out back in 2008 seem to need a little more bailing out only two years later. Bankers wasting our money, are you surprised?
  • Mike Singletary, the former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, was fired last night. The season isn't over. The 49ers clearly had a disappointing season, yes, but to fire him now was simply classless. What difference would one week make? The season ends next week.
  • The GOP is not in step with America. Their arrogance will probably be their downfall.
  • New analysis of the extension of unemployment insurance and the tax cuts is available. The extension of the unemployment insurance is stimulative to the economy. The tax cuts are not.

"President Barack Obama called the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles to congratulate him on giving Michael Vick a second chance. I just wonder if you or I get fired for doing something stupid whether somebody will take a chance on us. I hope so. " This was not something stupid - it was something evil. If I fail to stop at a stop sign, or one time drink to much and make a mistake, yes, I hope for a second chance. If I, with full knowledge of my actions, murder, rape or torture any living being I don't expect a second chance. Ever. Nor will I give one.

I believe in second chances. I believe that we should hold up these very flawed humans as examples of anything but failure. Thanks for your comments.

Reading the analysis of the recent tax bill I'm amazed how ANY lower or middle class people would vote Republican. The GOP claims to be fiscally prudent, yet despite evidence that the cuts for the wealthy will not do much for the economy but will substantially increase the deficit people believe their lies. How does this happen?

GOP convinces everyone that they to can be rich. The GOP also plays the issue card - abortion, family values, immigration, etc. It reminds me of the wizard of oz, "don't look at that man behind the curtain."

I had the same initial thought on Singletary getting fired. But I saw an analyst say from the 49ers perspective after the loss to the Rams the season was over. Time to start rebuilding now - why wait another week.

Just sad. I don't know how you can win in the NFL w/o a QB. Alex Smith ain't the one. It is too soon to tell if Troy Smith is the one. Frank Gore got hurt. Westbrook can't carry a team by himself. I just don't understand these unreal expectations. Thanks for your comments.
