King George?

In event of a terrorist attack or natural disaster, President Bush has signed an executive order (much of which is classified) which gives him the authority to declare Marshall Law. Yep, really.  So, if for example our government is incompetent and Osama Bin Laden himself comes to the US and blows something up, then George who was the source of the incompetence can ride in and save the day.  Oh, that sounds like a problem to me.

From The Progressive:

With scarcely a mention in the mainstream media, President Bush has ordered up a plan for responding to a catastrophic attack.

In a new National Security Presidential Directive, Bush lays out his plans for dealing with a "catastrophic emergency."

Under that plan, he entrusts himself with leading the entire federal government, not just the Executive Branch. And he gives himself the responsibility "for ensuring constitutional government."

He laid this all out in a document entitled "National Security Presidential Directive/NSPD 51" and "Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD-20."

The White House released it on May 9.

Other than a discussion on Daily Kos led off by a posting by Leo Fender, and a pro-forma notice in a couple of mainstream newspapers, this document has gone unremarked upon.

The subject of the document is entitled "National Continuity Policy." (more...)

Dana - Thanks for your comments. You are exactly correct. I'm trying to get in touch with a constitutional lawyer. I think that it will be Thursday or Friday before I have an answer for you. Thanks again.

Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside knowing the president can override all local and state forms of government in any natural or non natural event. Isn't that why we are suppose to be electing state and local authorities who are competent enough to deal with such things. I am glad I wasn't in New Orleans. But the state and local government in Mississippi where katrina landed did an awesome job of trying to any kind of help they could. They were overlooked and weren;t even in the news. They were on the sidelines because the the horrible job that the feds did in New Orleans. I will feel better when our huge earthquake hits knowing that the president will be safely in washington directing our business.

I am interested in viewing constitutional legal commentary concerning this order. This appears to provide the Chief Executive excessive powers beyond Constitutional authority. Where do we go to request Congressional review and oversight?
